A Hyundai Ioniq 5 that won’t start is usually a dead 12-volt. That stall shows up after apartment nights in Arlington and the District. The traction pack can still hold plenty of range. The small battery that boots the computers is the one that quit. Until that 12-volt wakes, Ready never comes on.
Apartment nights in Arlington and the District
Arlington is a county, with no incorporated towns. Stacked apartments and condos fill a lot of those blocks. The District’s housing stock is old too. Census ACS 2019-2023 figures track housing age. About 70 percent of Washington homes were built before 1980. Wheaton sits near 73 percent. Annandale is about 80 percent. Takoma Park is about 90 percent. A dedicated home charger is uncommon in those buildings. The Ioniq 5 often lives on a rented space with no assigned plug.
The car sits from dinner to morning. Modules keep sipping 12-volt power overnight. At 7 a.m. the fob does nothing. That’s the inner-core pattern. Alexandria, Silver Spring, and Hyattsville follow it too.
Ashburn, Gainesville, Centreville, and Germantown have much newer housing. A wall circuit is more common there. The Ioniq 5 in those driveways still has a 12-volt. It just sits plugged in more nights. The no-start you get in Arlington is the unplugged sit.
Pepco serves the District, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County. Dominion Energy Virginia serves most of Northern Virginia. Pepco EVsmart and Dominion’s Schedule 1EV are home programs. None of the utility EV pages we reviewed will charge a stranded car. A dark Ioniq 5 in a stacked garage is not a rebate visit.
The 12-volt is what lets the Ioniq 5 wake
The big pack moves the wheels. It doesn’t boot the car by itself. A small 12-volt battery feeds the locks, the screens, and the charge-port latch. It also feeds the modules that close the high-voltage contactors. When that battery is flat, those contactors never close. The Ioniq 5 stays dark. You can’t start a charge session either. The charge computer never comes up.

The Ioniq 6 sedan uses the same 12-volt first rule. If that’s the Hyundai in the garage, use the Ioniq 6 no-start checks.
Signs it’s the accessory battery, not the pack
Start with the cabin, not the charge app.
Dash, dome lights, and the screen are dim or fully dark. The fob stopped working from a few steps away. The charge-port door ignores the button. You press the brake and hear no click. A weekend sit without a drive points to the 12-volt. Treat a dark Ioniq 5 that way first.
A faint dash that never reaches Ready is a weak 12-volt. A fully black cabin is usually a flat one. Flickers, clicks, or a burst of random warnings can show the same failing battery. Then everything goes out.
There’s an easy miss before you open the hood. The Ioniq 5 wants your foot on the brake, then the Start/Stop button. Press the button with your foot off the pedal and you may get accessories only. The car never enters Ready. Try the brake press first. Then decide if the 12-volt is actually dead.
If the dash is on and range reads near zero, this isn’t a no-start. The pack needs miles. That’s a non-Tesla EV rescue, not a jump. If a high-voltage warning stays after the dash looks healthy, stop guessing. That one needs a dealer diagnostic scan.
Jump the labeled posts under the hood
You’re feeding the accessory battery. You aren’t touching orange high-voltage cables. Hyundai puts dedicated 12-volt jump terminals in the front compartment. You don’t have to dig to the battery case.
If the car is fully dark, the interior hood release may do nothing. Your model-year owner’s manual has the emergency hood steps. Don’t force the latch from memory.
Once the hood is up, look on the driver’s side for the fuse-box cover. The positive post sits under a red cap inside that box. Clip the red lead there. Clip the black lead to a marked ground or a clean chassis bolt. Don’t clamp black onto the battery’s own negative post. Use the marked ground instead. Sparking next to a battery case is the risk. That ground point is meant to avoid it.
Use a portable lithium jump pack. Don’t pull power from another EV’s drive battery. A step-by-step EV 12-volt jump walks the clamp order. Connect positive first. Finish on the Ioniq 5’s ground last. Let the posts sit a couple of minutes. Then put your foot on the brake and press Start.
If the screens still look stuck, try a soft reset. Hold Start/Stop about 10 to 15 seconds with your foot off the brake. That can clear a stuck module. Give the electronics a minute after the screens flicker. Then try Ready again with the brake down. A second fob is worth a try too. A weak fob battery can fake a no-start. Your manual names the in-car fob pocket if the wireless signal is thin.
If a jump doesn’t hold, stop guessing
A correct jump that dies again is not a second DIY loop. The 12-volt isn’t holding a charge. An operator can replace that battery on site. Don’t keep jumping a cell that’s finished. When it dies again after a jump, replace that battery. Don’t add another few minutes on the clamps.
If the dash never wakes after a solid jump, stop. A module or high-voltage fault needs a dealer scan. Stay out of travel lanes while you wait. On the 495 Express Lanes, pull to the left shoulder. When Ready comes on but you have no miles
A live dash with a near-zero range figure is an empty pack. Cabin heat or AC on a Capital Beltway crawl uses energy without covering miles. So does a standstill on I-66 inside the Beltway. Recurrent Auto studied more than 30,000 EVs in winter. A typical car keeps about 80 percent of range at 32F. It keeps about 70 percent at 20F. Cabin heat is the drain. Dulles runs colder and snowier than Reagan National. A Loudoun or upper Montgomery night hits harder than a District garage that week.
That still isn’t a 12-volt failure. The dash would show range. The fob would still work. You need energy at the CCS port, not another jump.

Other long sits around this metro
The apartment-deck night is the usual Ioniq 5 no-start. It isn’t the only sit.
Reagan National puts complimentary EV charging on Level 1 of Parking Garages 1 and 2. Those stalls are first-come and limited. Plenty of returning travelers never plugged in. They walk out to a silent Ioniq 5 that still has range. Dulles has Level 2 charging in Garage 1 and Garage 2. The Economy Lot is the largest on-airport option, reached by shuttle at Curb 2F. A week away still leaves the 12-volt as the part that fails first.
Union Station’s garage produces the same week-long sit. So do WMATA park-and-ride decks across the metro. After enough idle days, the 12-volt can’t wake the car.
On Maryland primary roads, CHART lists jump starts among the help you request on #77. Use it on I-495, I-270, US-50, and MD-295. CHART’s published material doesn’t describe charging a stranded EV. VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol covers Virginia interstates, including I-66. Published pages describe incident clearance and short-term traffic control. They don’t describe EV charging. We couldn’t confirm a DDOT motorist-assistance patrol in the District. DC drivers use MPD, a private plan, or US Park Police on the parkways. A disabled vehicle on an NPS parkway goes to US Park Police. Call 202-610-7500. Those parkways ban commercial vehicles and trucks over 10,000 lb.
None of the three codes we reviewed has a provision just for an empty EV. Disabled-vehicle rules apply the same to an Ioniq 5 as to any car.
