Two batteries, and only one of them starts the car
The Equinox EV runs two power systems that don’t stand in for each other. A high-voltage Ultium pack turns the wheels. A small 12-volt AGM battery, maintenance-free and separate, boots the modules that let the pack work. Kill the 12-volt and the car is done. An 80 percent pack reading doesn’t matter. You won’t get a power-on. You won’t shift to drive. The fob won’t answer.

Separate a low pack from a dead 12-volt before you call. A car that’s only short on range still powers on. You’ll see a low-battery warning. You can usually shift to drive. You just won’t go far. A dead 12-volt feels like a brick. No chime. No cluster. No fob.

Get in through the liftgate, not the front door
When the 12-volt is dead, the fob can’t talk to the car. The usual unlock does nothing. Chevy hid a mechanical key blade in the fob for this. On the Equinox EV, that blade is for the liftgate, not the driver’s door.
Press the release on the fob and pull the blade free. Walk to the rear. Use the blade in the liftgate’s mechanical lock. Once the liftgate is open, climb in from the back. Pull the interior hood release. The 12-volt sits under the front hood. Learn that order before you’re in a dark garage at Dulles or Tysons Corner Center.
If the blade won’t turn, stop. Don’t force the lock. Call for a non-Tesla EV rescue and let the operator handle entry.
Where the 12-volt lives, and how to jump it
The 12-volt AGM battery is under the front hood. After the liftgate entry and the hood release, look for the marked 12-volt terminals. A metal cage or bracket often sits over the battery. Owners commonly report four 10mm nuts holding it. That cage partly blocks the negative post. You don’t need to remove it for a normal jump.
Clamp the positive jumper lead to the positive terminal. Clamp the negative lead to a bare-metal chassis ground. Don’t clamp negative to the battery’s own negative post. Some owners with a small jump pack keep the car’s positive lead out of the circuit at first. Then they complete the connection once the pack has a chance to wake the car. Shoulders, patrols, and why a DIY jump can wait
