Tysons is the unincorporated place. The mall is still Tysons Corner Center. That garage is a classic long dwell. So are the office and mall decks in Merrifield. A lot of inner Fairfax housing predates a wall charger. In Annandale, Census ACS 2019-2023 figures put about 79.8 percent of homes in buildings from before 1980. Continued driving possible is true while you’re moving. The high-voltage system feeds the 12-volt on the road. Finish the commute if the i4 is already awake. Then treat the message as a clock. A weak 12-volt often dies overnight. Morning is when the cabin goes silent.
Once the car has already gone dark, you’re past the warning stage. Plan a 12-volt replacement. Jumping it once is a way home, not a repair. Don’t ignore a flicker of warnings on the way into the garage. Erratic lights, a slow iDrive boot, and a trunk button that lags are early tells. The replace-battery message is the car saying those tells have crossed a line. Keep driving that evening if you must. Don’t park it for another full workday and hope.
How a dead 12-volt shows up
The i4 can look stolen, bricked, or out of charge. It’s usually none of those. The iDrive screen stays black. Door handles that need power don’t pop. You can’t select a gear. You can’t put the car in neutral for a tow until 12-volt power returns. The charge port may ignore a public plug because the computers are asleep.
Sometimes the fob still unlocks at close range, then the start sequence dies. That’s a 12-volt with a sliver of voltage left. It can’t hold the boot load. Warning lights that flicker and vanish are the same story. A trunk button that does nothing is another clue. The trunk release is electronic. A dead 12-volt kills it.
Don’t confuse this with an empty drive pack. An empty pack still usually lets the screens wake. A dead 12-volt takes the screens with it. Getting into the car when nothing responds
BMW hid the i4’s 12-volt in the trunk. It sits on the passenger side, behind the trunk liner. There’s no frunk and no under-hood battery. Popping the hood won’t show the AGM. That confuses a lot of first-time jumps.
The catch is access. The trunk latch needs 12-volt power. If the fob is dead, use the metal key blade inside the fob. Unlock the driver’s door with that blade. Once you’re in, fold the rear seatbacks and reach the trunk from the cabin. Pull the liner on the right. That’s the AGM.

Stand close to the handle before you give up on the fob. Passive entry can fade before the battery is fully gone. A few inches can be enough. If that fails, go straight to the physical key. Don’t pry the trunk.
Jump from the hood posts
You don’t need the trunk to jump the i4. BMW put a positive jump post under the hood for this exact failure. The interior hood release is mechanical. It still works with zero 12-volt. Pull it, then release the hood latch at the nose.
Look for a red cap on the driver’s side of the bay, near the firewall or fuse box. That cap covers the positive terminal. For ground, use unpainted metal on a chassis bracket or bolt. The hood posts are the designed path. Connect positive to positive first. Then clamp the negative to chassis ground.
A jump pack is cleaner than another car in a tight garage. Let the i4 sit on the pack for two to three minutes. Then try to wake it. iDrive can take another 30 to 45 seconds to boot. If the screen comes up and then dies, the AGM can’t hold load. Stop cycling it.

After it wakes: drive, or stop
A successful jump isn’t a new battery. Drive to a shop if the car holds. Don’t start another eight-hour garage sit. Inner Fairfax decks will drain a marginal AGM again. If it dies a second time on that trip, stop. That battery needs replacement, not another boost.
BMW shops often register a new AGM to the car’s battery management. Without that step, charging of the 12-volt can stay wrong. Confirm the current coding procedure with the shop.
