Tesla roadside assistance is free only when Tesla’s own plan says it is. An empty pack on the Capital Beltway isn’t a warranty defect. Tesla’s published roadside page says out-of-range help may be available. It also says Tesla doesn’t cover that help financially. Coverage is a Tesla plan question, not a Beltway promise. A DC-area operator still quotes you before any extra work.
Tesla’s free window lives in the app, not on the shoulder
Tesla doesn’t sell a separate roadside membership on top of the car. You don’t enroll, and you don’t pay Tesla a yearly roadside plan. Help starts in the Tesla app tied to the VIN that’s stuck. Tesla’s roadside page is the request path, not a local dispatch board. Confirm the live wording at tesla.com/support before you tap submit.
Complimentary roadside, when Tesla offers it, tracks the warranty Tesla lists for that VIN. Open Specs and Warranty in the app and read the dates Tesla lists. Don’t guess those dates from a blog. Tesla’s public New Vehicle Limited Warranty PDF we reviewed covers the battery and drive unit. That coverage runs eight years, with mileage caps that vary by model. Model S and Model X run to 150,000 miles. Model 3 and Model Y Standard or Standard Range Plus run to 100,000 miles. Long Range and Performance Model 3 and Model Y run to 120,000 miles. Those terms still require a 70 percent capacity floor. VIN-specific language in the app still controls, and that PDF doesn’t cover Cybertruck.
A longer battery warranty isn’t a promise that every roadside call is free. Tesla can restrict roadside availability case by case for safety or regulatory reasons. A live lane on I-495 is a 911 call first. If an Extended Service Agreement is in play, read that contract. Tesla Support is the authority for what it still bundles.
What Tesla won’t treat as a free energy call
This is the call that surprises owners. Tesla says out-of-range assistance may be available. Tesla also says it isn’t financially covered. Running to zero because the Beltway sat still isn’t a mechanical defect. Misreading range on I-66 isn’t a defect either.
Cabin heat and air both come from the traction pack. Sitting stationary burns charge without covering miles. That’s the I-270 crawl between Rockville and Germantown. That’s the I-95 standstill through Woodbridge and Dale City. Recurrent Auto studied more than 30,000 EVs in winter. A typical car keeps about 80 percent of range at freezing. It keeps about 70 percent at 20F. Don’t treat those as Tesla-only numbers.
Dulles runs colder and snowier than Reagan National. Loudoun, upper Montgomery, and Prince William feel that first. The January 2022 I-95 shutdown, just south of this metro, is the regional reminder.
Tesla’s published path for an empty pack isn’t a complimentary charge at the bumper. The operators we connect you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source instead. They bring a native NACS plug for Tesla. A CCS or J1772 adapter covers other EVs. They typically add 10 to 20 miles of range. That takes 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. Out of charge on the Capital Beltway walks the next steps. Mobile EV charging is the service name for that visit.
Pepco serves the District, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County. Dominion Energy Virginia serves most of Northern Virginia. NOVEC covers parts of Loudoun and Prince William. None of the utility EV pages we reviewed will charge a car that’s already stranded.
A dead 12-volt can look like an empty pack
The 12-volt, or low-voltage, battery wakes the screens, the locks, and the high-voltage contactors. When it dies, the car looks fully dead. The traction pack may still hold miles.
Long sits catch travelers coming back to Dulles. MWAA publishes Level 2 charging in Garage 1 and Garage 2 at Dulles. A week in the Economy Lot is a long sit on the 12-volt. Reagan National lists complimentary charging on Level 1 of Parking Garages 1 and 2. Union Station’s garage and WMATA park-and-ride lots produce the same week-long sit.
Tesla’s current Model Y manual describes a lithium-ion low-voltage battery. Jump posts sit after the hood is open. The wires behind the tow-eye cover only release the hood latches. Tesla says they can’t charge that low-voltage battery. Other models stay on their own Tesla manuals.
Older housing tracks with no driveway plug. Takoma Park, Annandale, Wheaton, and Washington all have high shares of pre-1980 stock. Arlington, Alexandria, Silver Spring, and Hyattsville show the same apartment pattern. The car sat long enough for the 12-volt to sag. Tesla may jump it or replace it if Tesla’s current terms say so. Confirm that in the app before you assume Tesla will cover it. The operators we connect you with can jump that 12-volt on site. That operator quotes you before starting.
Tesla’s national plan doesn’t change this pavement
Tesla roadside is the same program in every state, but your stall is local. A Model 3 at zero on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge sits at a three-jurisdiction line. That’s Alexandria, Oxon Hill, and the District. The American Legion Bridge is the same pinch. McLean sits on one bank, and Montgomery County sits on the other. Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax are separate jurisdictions too.
On the 495 Express Lanes, pull to the left shoulder. Those lanes sit in the median. On the 95 and 395 Express Lanes, pull to the nearest shoulder. Stay in the car until help arrives. Express Assist is a free patrol on those lanes. It helps with minor mechanical issues and will call a tow. It doesn’t tow, and published FAQs don’t describe EV charging.
Maryland’s CHART Emergency Traffic Patrol covers the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. That includes I-495, I-270, US-50, and MD-295. Dial #77 from a breakdown on those state primary roadways. CHART technicians change tires and jump-start 12-volt batteries. CHART’s published pages don’t describe a charge for an empty EV pack. VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol covers Virginia interstates, including I-95 and I-66. You reach that help through Virginia 511. In the District, no DDOT motorist-assistance patrol turned up in the sources we checked.
The Baltimore-Washington and George Washington Memorial parkways ban commercial vehicles and trucks over 10,000 lb. A disabled vehicle on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is reported to U.S. Park Police at 202-610-7500. When Tesla roadside assistance can’t help a DC-area driver covers those stalls. The three jurisdictions’ vehicle codes we reviewed have no special rule for an empty EV pack.
Flats, lockouts, and crashes sit outside a free energy story
Tesla’s current support page is the list for those stalls. We couldn’t confirm a public 2026 per-service fee table on tesla.com. A flat on the Beltway is still a tire job. Tesla doesn’t typically pack a matching spare. A lockout belongs in the Tesla app, not with a charging operator. Read Tesla’s live page for tires, lockouts, winching, and misuse exclusions. For how Tesla’s list compares with a quoted local visit, see what Tesla roadside covers, and when you still call us.
After Tesla’s warranty dates, Tesla bills the dispatch
Once the warranty Tesla lists for your VIN has ended, don’t assume any roadside call is complimentary. We couldn’t verify a current public price list on tesla.com. Don’t use an old blog table as Tesla’s invoice. You request in the app, and Tesla sets that bill. A local operator is a separate bill. Charge Pro DC doesn’t set prices, doesn’t take the payment, and doesn’t own the truck. What you pay for mobile EV charging, and who bills you explains that quote.
What a quoted local operator can still do
Charge Pro DC is a referral line for the District, Maryland, and Virginia. It matches stranded EV drivers with independent local operators. It doesn’t perform the work, own trucks, or employ technicians. It doesn’t hold a trade license, set prices, or promise an arrival time. The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. They bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. They handle Tesla and every major EV brand. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly. Tesla roadside rescue is how we label that match. Agree to the quote before any cable goes in.
When to call Tesla, and when to get a local quote
Call Tesla first when you’re inside the warranty Tesla lists. Then get a local quote if Tesla can’t send a charge to the car. Call when the pack is empty and you need range at the bumper. We don’t promise that an operator is available. The independent pro confirms the work and the terms. Call (202) 629-0844 and we’ll connect you with a local operator.
