A Subaru Solterra that won’t start around here is usually a dead 12-volt battery. The traction pack can still hold plenty of range. The small battery just can’t wake the computers that close the high-voltage contactors. That shows up a lot in Arlington, Alexandria, Silver Spring, and the District. The car sits unplugged in an apartment lot for days.

Why apartment lots kill a Solterra’s 12-volt
A lot of inner-suburb housing here predates home charging. Takoma Park’s housing is about 90 percent pre-1980. Annandale is about 80 percent. Wheaton is about 73 percent. The District itself is about 70 percent. Those buildings were wired for lamps and window units. They weren’t wired for a 240-volt garage circuit.
A Solterra in Wheaton, Hyattsville, or Annandale often sits on street parking. Public plugs are the usual overnight plan. The car sits dark. The 12-volt still feeds the fob, the modules, and the computers that stay awake. A lead-acid pack in that duty cycle sulfates. Then one morning Power does nothing.
Pepco covers the District, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County. Dominion Energy Virginia covers most of Northern Virginia. NOVEC serves parts of Loudoun and Prince William. None of those utilities send a truck to wake a stranded Solterra. Their EV pages cover home chargers and rates. They don’t cover a car that won’t boot in a lot.
Hot, humid stretches above 90F wear a lead-acid 12-volt faster. So does a hard freeze west of the Beltway. Dulles runs colder than Reagan National. Loudoun and upper Montgomery feel that. The traction pack also loses range in the cold. Recurrent Auto studied more than 30,000 EVs. A typical EV keeps about 80 percent of range at 32F. It keeps about 70 percent at 20F. Cabin heat comes from the pack. That’s a range problem. The silent, dark, no-READY failure is still the 12-volt.
The car has two batteries on purpose. The high-voltage pack turns the motors. The 12-volt runs lights, locks, screens, and the computers that wake the pack. Kill the 12-volt and the pack stays locked, even at 60 or 70 percent. You never see that number. The dash never comes up.
The same overnight death hits after a long sit at a WMATA park-and-ride. You leave the Solterra in a Silver Line or Red Line garage and ride in. You come back after work. The car looks fine. The 12-volt has been draining the whole time. A week in a long-stay airport garage is the stretched version. You land, press the fob, and nothing happens.

The symptoms that point at the 12-volt
A few signs separate a dead 12-volt from a real pack fault:
- Dash, cabin lights, and the screen stay dark when you press Power
- The fob won’t unlock. The physical key is the only way in
- Hazard lights won’t come on
- No lock sound and no chime as you walk up
- It drove fine last night. This morning it’s a brick
That last one is the tell. A 12-volt usually fails overnight after weeks of getting weaker. If the dash lights, throws a high-voltage warning, then shuts down, that’s a different fault. Take that one to a Subaru dealer. For the “nothing happens” case, start with the 12-volt.

Where the Solterra 12-volt and jump posts sit
The Solterra shares the bZ4X layout. The 12-volt sits under a plastic cover on the driver’s side of the front bay. You can reach the terminals there. Subaru also gives you jump posts on that same side. You don’t have to pull the whole cover.
Jump post locations:
- Positive (+): red terminal post under a hinged red plastic cover, driver’s-side front of the bay, marked with a ”+”
- Negative (-): skip the battery’s negative post. Clamp an unpainted metal bracket or bolt on the bay structure, away from the battery, so any spark stays clear of off-gassing
How to do it:
- Leave the jump pack or donor car off until every clamp is set.
- Connect positive to the Solterra’s red jump post, then to the donor positive.
- Connect negative to the donor negative, then last to bare metal on the Solterra, not the battery.
- Power the pack on, or start the donor, and wait two to three minutes.
- Press the Solterra’s Power button. The dash should light and READY should appear.
- Remove the clamps in reverse order once the car is awake.
Years and trims vary. Check the owner’s manual for your exact year before you connect anything. A dark garage in Alexandria or Silver Spring is a tough place to jump a car. The operators we refer do this on Solterras. The longer caution list is in how to jump start an EV.
A jump on a Maryland state road can also come from CHART. Dial #77 on I-495, I-270, US-50, or MD-295. Technicians handle tire changes, jump starts, and a bit of gas or radiator water. That’s a 12-volt jump, not a CCS charge. VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol on I-66 and I-95 covers incidents and debris. Its published pages don’t describe EV charging. Inside the District, no DDOT motorist-assistance patrol turned up in the records we checked. On the Baltimore-Washington Parkway a disabled vehicle is a US Park Police matter. The same is true on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, Clara Barton, Rock Creek, and Suitland Parkway. Those roads have narrow or missing shoulders. Stay with the car.
When it’s the traction pack instead
Sometimes the 12-volt is fine and you’re out of miles. The dash lights. READY comes on. The display reads zero, or close to it, and the car won’t move. A jump won’t help.
Beltway crawls and I-95 standstills do this without covering distance. Heat or AC while you sit still pulls from the pack. A long I-270 run into Rockville or Germantown can finish a low pack. The car then sits empty in the lot. That’s range, not the 12-volt.
The Solterra uses a CCS charge port. Operators we match you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source. They also bring a CCS adapter for non-Tesla EVs. They typically add 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That figure is charging time on site. It isn’t an arrival window. It’s meant to get you to a public fast charger or home. That work is out-of-charge recovery, separate from a 12-volt jump.
If READY comes back and the car dies again the next morning, the 12-volt is worn out. A jump is only a short fix. Plan on a replacement, not another overnight hope.
