You jump a Tesla at the 12-volt posts, not the pack under the floor. A Model 3, Y, S, or X often won’t wake after a long sit. That’s usually the Dulles Economy Lot or a Metro garage. The traction pack can still hold range. The small 12-volt that runs the computers went flat.

Confirm it’s the 12-volt, not the pack

Tesla runs two electrical systems that don’t share a jump point. The high-voltage pack lives under the floor. No consumer jumper can charge that pack. The 12-volt battery powers the computers, latches, lights, and radios. When that battery dies, the car behaves like a dead gas car. Door handles don’t present, and the screen stays black. The phone app may not reach the car.

Check these signs before you pick up a clamp.

  • Black screen, silent app, ignored key card: treat it as 12-volt.
  • Locks still work, and the display shows low range: that’s the pack.
  • Dim lights or a slow, glitchy wake: 12-volt again.

You come back from a week away and the car looks fully dead. On this pattern, it usually isn’t the floor pack. The car slept for days while the 12-volt kept feeding always-on modules. Then voltage dropped below what the computers need.

If you’ve had slow boots and random warnings for weeks, the battery was already failing. A jump can still wake it, but plan a replacement soon. Do Teslas have a 12-volt battery is a model-by-model map of where that battery sits.

Newer Model 3 and Model Y cars often use a lithium 12-volt. Jump posts can look familiar, but the chemistry isn’t the same. Read the lithium 12-volt steps for a newer 3 or Y if that’s your build. Tesla’s in-app manual follows your VIN, so use it when the posts look different.

Why a long sit in this metro flattens the 12-volt

Long-dwell parking is the local trigger. MWAA’s Dulles Economy Lot is the big on-airport lot, reached by shuttle from Curb 2F. People leave a Tesla there for a week. They come back to a car that won’t wake. MWAA publishes Level 2 charging in Garage 1 and Garage 2. Reagan National puts charging on Level 1 of Parking Garages 1 and 2. Those stalls are first come, first served for parking customers. Union Station’s garage in the District is another long sit. WMATA park-and-ride garages follow the same week-long 12-volt pattern.

Cold finishes a weak battery faster, and Dulles runs colder than Reagan National. Loudoun, upper Montgomery, and Prince William take harder freezes than the District. The inner Virginia core stays milder. A 12-volt that was already tired fails on the first hard night.

Ashburn, Sterling, and Herndon drivers see this after flights. Reston drivers see it in Silver Line lots. Tysons office garages produce the same dead-screen morning. Takoma Park and Annandale still have older apartment stock. Cars sit in those garages all day.

Pepco, Dominion Energy Virginia, and NOVEC publish home-charger programs. None of the utility pages we reviewed send a truck to a stranded Tesla.

VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol works Virginia interstates, including I-66, through Virginia 511. Published material covers incidents and debris. It doesn’t describe Tesla 12-volt jumps. In Maryland, MDOT SHA CHART patrols the Baltimore/Washington area. It lists jump starts as a motorist assist. Dial #77 on roads like I-495, I-270, and US-50. Tell the technician it’s a Tesla 12-volt. In the District, no DDOT motorist-assistance patrol showed up in the sources we checked. District drivers lean on MPD, a private plan, or US Park Police on the parkways.

What to bring, and what not to use as a donor

Use a portable lithium jump starter. You don’t need a second car idling beside you. Don’t use another Tesla as a donor, because Tesla says that can stress the donor.

Bring the pack, your key card, and a small tool for the tow-eye cover. Stand where you can reach the bumper without stepping into traffic. A shuttle lane at Dulles and a packed Metro garage are tight. Don’t stop in a live aisle to pry a cover.

If the car is dead and locked, you need entry first. Tesla dead and locked out covers that path, then come back to the posts.

Model 3 and Model Y jump posts

These two models share the roadside method. The 12-volt sits under the frunk floor. A dead 12-volt kills the frunk latch motor. You often can’t lift the hood to reach the battery. Tesla added jump posts behind the tow-eye cover for that exact failure.

Find the small rectangular cover on the front bumper, driver’s side and low. Pry it at the notch with a flat tool or your fingers. Inside is a red positive post, with a chassis ground close by. Use those points when the frunk won’t open.

If the frunk is already open, go under the carpet and foam. You’ll see the 12-volt itself, with a red positive cover and a black negative. Those terminals are fine when you can already get in.

Stay on labeled 12-volt points. Don’t pull orange high-voltage connectors, and don’t crawl under the pack.

Model S and Model X: open the frunk first

On older Model S cars, the 12-volt sits under the frunk mat. That’s the layout before the 2021 refresh. Lift the mat, pull the foam insert, and you’ll see marked terminals. Model X uses that same under-mat layout on the older cars.

On refreshed Model S and Model X from 2021 on, Tesla moved the jump posts. Look on the driver’s side of the frunk, near the firewall. You’ll find a red positive post behind a small cover. The chassis ground is on that same side.

Tesla puts manual release loops in the front wheel wells. On Model S, reach through a flap in the driver’s-side liner and pull the loop. You may need two pulls: one for the primary latch, then one for the secondary. The frunk should lift a little.

Model X uses a wheel-well loop as well. Pull it firmly once you have it. If the cable won’t move, stop. Forcing it can leave you with a frunk that’s still shut.

These loops have moved by model year. If your liner doesn’t match a generic description, don’t keep digging. Check Tesla’s support pages or the owner’s manual for your VIN.

How to clip on and wake the car

The clamp order is the same once you can see the posts.

  1. Park the jump pack next to the bumper and confirm it’s charged.
  2. Open the tow-eye cover, or the frunk, for your model.
  3. Clip the red clamp on the red positive post. Seat it so it can’t slip.
  4. Clip the black clamp on a clean chassis ground. Use the dedicated ground by the tow-eye posts when you have it. In the frunk, a bare metal bracket beats a crowded negative post.
  5. Switch the pack on if it has a switch, then wait a short moment. The body computer needs to see voltage before it boots.
  6. Try the key card or the door handle. The screen should start to light.
  7. When the car is awake, disconnect black first, then red.
  8. Keep the car awake, then plug it in or drive it. The DC-DC converter recharges the 12-volt from the pack. That happens when the car is on or charging.

Don’t skip that last step. Jumping a Tesla doesn’t refill the 12-volt like a long drive in a gas car. The converter does the real recharge.

After it boots, don’t let the 12-volt die again

Get onto a charger when you can. A home Level 2 is the clean follow-up. At Dulles, Garage 1 and Garage 2 are the Level 2 sites MWAA publishes. If you’re still in the Economy Lot, the car may not stay awake. You may have two problems. The 12-volt died, and the pack may also be low. A short hop across the Dulles Toll Road may not finish the recharge. Keep the car awake until you can plug in.

If it dies again in a few hours, stop jumping it. The battery needs a test and likely a swap. The operators we connect you with can jump on site. They can replace a 12-volt when that’s the honest fix. They quote before they start, and they bill you directly.

When to stop and call a local operator

Stop if you can’t reach the tow-eye cover or the release loops. Stop if the car wakes and dies again right away. Stop if you’re on a road with no room to stand.

On the 495 Express Lanes, pull to the left shoulder in the median. On the 95 and 395 Express Lanes, pull to the nearest shoulder. Express Assist can help with minor issues and can call a tow. It doesn’t tow the car. Stay in the car until help arrives, per the published Express Lanes guidance.

NPS parkways have narrow or missing shoulders. Commercial vehicles and trucks over 10,000 lb are banned there. Report a disabled vehicle on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to US Park Police at 202-610-7500.

Don’t stand with clamps on the American Legion Bridge or the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The American Legion Bridge links McLean and Montgomery County. The Wilson Bridge is where Virginia, Maryland, and the District meet. Both spans are high and windy, with little shoulder.
