Two ground-fault watchers on one circuit

Most Level 2 EVSE units already include ground-fault protection. If the receptacle also sits on a GFCI, two devices watch the same run. EVSEs send a small test current to ground to confirm the earth path. That tiny current can open the external GFCI even when nothing is leaking. Electricians often hardwire the station instead of using a plug-in GFCI receptacle. If only the EV charger trips that GFCI, this interaction is a likely reason.

Humidity in the outlet or the connector

Uncovered outdoor boxes collect condensation in this metro. A wet receptacle is a genuine fault trip, not a random glitch. Dry the outlet and the plug end before you assume the panel is undersized. If it returns after a dry-out, stop using that outlet. Call an electrician for that box.

When the EVSE or cable is at fault

This is less common, and it’s worth ruling out. A failed charging station or a damaged portable cable can trip a healthy circuit. It happens when the unit is asked for full power. If a different EVSE holds on the same outlet, blame the equipment. If every charger trips the same breaker, look back at the circuit.

What you can check without opening the panel

Reset the breaker once and watch what happens. Check the outlet and connector for moisture or corrosion. Write down whether anything else was running. Don’t keep resetting the same breaker. Don’t open the panel to inspect wiring. A repeating trip is information for an electrician. It isn’t a puzzle you should force closed. Getting range while the house circuit is down

Electrical work runs on the electrician’s calendar, not yours. Pepco’s EVsmart program publishes residential charger incentives for some Maryland addresses. Confirm the current offer on Pepco’s site before you plan around it. We couldn’t confirm a publishable rebate figure that still holds. Pepco sets those amounts, and they change. If you need miles in the meantime, mobile EV charging is the stopgap. Independent operators bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. Teslas take a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. Operators typically add 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging time. That’s charging time, never an arrival window.
